When it comes to motorcycle, golf cart, lawn & garden, and marine batteries, a good offseason charger is the key to ensuring the longevity of the battery.  The electrochemistry of seasonal batteries is no different than that of your standard car battery.  If you can get five years out of your standard car battery, then you should get the same from your seasonal products, but unfortunately the typical seasonal battery rarely goes beyond two years.  The difference in the longevity of the two types of batteries is because the seasonal batteries may sit for an extended period of time and corrode.  Thus loosing the ability to hold a charge.

Battery chargers have come a long way over the last ten years with the advent of the “smart charger.”  The smart charger electronically monitors the state of charge of the battery, and when needed sends a low amperage current through the battery to bring it up to 100% state of charge.  When the charger has achieved full charge, it will turn off and monitor the battery’s float voltage to determine when the charger needs to reactivate.  Some of our more sophisticated chargers also periodically “pulse” the battery, which means that the battery is sent intermittent pulse amperages, that keep the battery de-sulphated, and in optimal condition.
